There is a new guild in town, the new Diamond Valley Writers’ Guild. Their first meeting was held at the Hemet Public Library on Latham Street. About forty people were in attendance, a great showing for a new enterprise. Half of those who attended joined the Guild that day.

At the first meeting, President Lynne Spreen described the many ways in which the Guild hopes to be of service to the writing community in the San Jacinto / Hemet valley and beyond. The guild is there to provide a casual meeting place for writers to meet and visit with each other, while learning something useful about the art or business of writing. They will also publicize author events (ex. book signings) and support each other.

Other areas the group hopes to be of service in is serving as ‘Information Central’ for civic groups who wish to contact authors to participate in events sponsored by their organizations. They will also serve as an information resource for those looking for writing groups. If you currently operate a writing group, or would like to start one, you can be listed on their website. Download Writing Group Listing for DVWG Website and return it as an email attachment to DVWritersGuild@Gmail.com, or mail it to PO Box 1154, Hemet, CA 92543.

The benefits for members are growing. Members will be able to list their books on the website (that feature is coming soon). They will also be able to submit their works to a new guild literary magazine, which will also be featured on their website. The cost of membership is just $20 per year (January – December). The Guild is in the process of incorporating as a 501(c)(3). As soon as that’s accomplished they will enable online payment options.

Their first featured speaker, Ray Strait, dazzled guests with his knowledge of writing and the publishing industry. He shared his writing tips learned from his extensive experience, as well as anecdotes from his time in the TV, movie, and book publishing industries. He is witty and knowledgeable–the time flew.

The meeting enkindled the kind of warmth and camaraderie most of us hope for when we gather with our friends and colleagues. Their next meeting will be on Saturday, February 27, when they will experiment with a new format: the roundtable discussion, led by three published authors. For more information, please email them at DVWritersGuild@gmail.com or visit the EVENTS PAGE ON THIS WEBSITE.
