If you’re thinking of doing this, the cost can be daunting. However, you might consider ACX, an Amazon (of course) company. I recorded Dakota Blues for free. All I did was join ACX, fill out the profile info, including an excerpt and description of my novel. Then people read the excerpt – it’s called an audition. I chose my narrator, thanked the rest, and began working with Caroline Miller. She’s incredibly professional, works fast, and was a delight to work with. We finished up in just a few days. ACX, Caroline, and I will split the proceeds for the length of the agreement. That’s the price of “free” but it was worth it to me. Here is a helpful guide for how to do an audiobook using ACX.

Thanks to Jane Friedman and Jay Swanson for the article. (This post was shared by Lynne Spreen.)
