The Guild is Live!

Congratulations to the new Diamond Valley Writers’ Guild! Our first meeting was held at the Hemet Public Library on Latham Street.  Approximately forty people attended, a great turnout! Half joined the Guild that day.

Our President, Lynne Spreen, described the ways in which the Guild hopes to be of service to the writing community in the San Jacinto / Hemet area and beyond. These were the key points:

  • To provide a casual meeting place for writers to meet and visit with each other, while learning something useful about the art or business of writing.
  • To publicize author events (ex. book signings) and support each other (no more crickets!)
  • To serve as Information Central for civic groups who wish to contact authors to participate in events sponsored by their organizations.
  • To serve as an information resource for those looking for writing groups. If you currently operate a writing group, or would like to start one, you can be listed on our website. Download Writing Group Listing for DVWG Website and return it as an email attachment to DVWritersGuild@Gmail.com, or mail it to PO Box 1154, Hemet, CA 92543.
  • Members will be able to list their books on the website (that feature is coming soon).
  • Members will also be able to submit their works to our literary magazine, which will also be featured on this website.
  • Membership is $20 per year (January – December).

The Guild is in the process of incorporating as a 501(c)(3). As soon as that’s done, we’ll enable online payment options.

Our featured speaker, Ray Strait, dazzled us with his knowledge of writing and the publishing industry. He shared writing tips as well as anecdotes from his time in the TV, movie, and book publishing industries. He’s a witty raconteur, and time flew. Soon enough the meeting ended, but many people stayed and visited for another half hour. It was the kind of warmth and camaraderie most of us hope for when we gather with our friends and colleagues. Here’s hoping for many more.

Our next meeting will be on Saturday, February 27, when we experiment with a new format: the roundtable discussion, led by three published authors. For more information on that, click here. Happy writing! (This post was shared by Lynne Spreen.) Late add: The Valley Chronicle posted this article about our meeting. We appreciate the coverage!
